Why I started keeping this checklist

I've been handling safety workwear orders for a mid-sized industrial supplier since 2014. In my first year (2014), I ordered 40 insulated Carhartt winter coveralls for a refinery customer. The product photos looked warm, the price was right, and the description said 'winter coveralls.' It didn't say 'FR.' The customer required NFPA 70E arc-rated outerwear for a specific area. I only believed the rule to verify every label after I ignored it once. The second mistake happened in September 2022. Carhartt winter coveralls: warmth isn't a safety rating

Carhartt winter coveralls are popular for good reason: they're tough, warm, and sized for real work. But not every Carhartt winter coverall is rated for the same hazard. If a job spec says arc-rated, NFPA 70E compliant, or FR, the item's label needs to say something like ATPV 8.0 cal/cm² or HRC 2. Warmth alone won't keep a worker safe from arc flash.

Check for the actual rating on the inside tag. If the tag isn't there, ask for the certificate of conformity before you place the purchase order.

Carhartt reflective shirt: high-visibility is a class, not a color

Same story, different label. A Carhartt reflective shirt might have bright fabric and reflective tape, but if it isn't certified under ANSI/ISEA 107, it isn't high-visibility apparel. There's an easy trap: what I call 'the orange shirt problem.' The shirt looks reflective until a truck comes over a hill at sunrise.

When I compared a compliant Carhartt reflective shirt and a non-rated lookalike side by side in a parking lot, I finally understood why the label matters. The compliant shirt's reflective background material lit up in the headlights from maybe 400 feet. The lookalike disappeared at 50 feet. Same color, same general design. Different level of protection. That comparison changed how I purchase.

Be specific about the class too. For most road work, you'll need Class 2 or Class 3 depending on traffic speed and background. For work near moving vehicles, Class 3 has more background material and reflective trim. The certification label should show the class. If you're also in an FR zone, you'll need a shirt that meets both ANSI/ISEA 107 and NFPA 70E or NFPA 2112. Don't assume either standard is automatic.

Bulwark coveralls: brand doesn't replace the label

I get procurement forms that specify Bulwark coveralls by name. Bulwark makes solid FR gear, and I've ordered it for clients. But naming a brand is not the same as defining the hazard. A Bulwark coverall can be the right choice for a flash-fire environment, and a completely different Bulwark product could be wrong for an arc-flash environment. You have to match the product's arc rating and fabric to the actual job.

I learned that when a client's spec called for coveralls, FR, NFPA 2112 compliant. The first quote we got listed a different brand (not Bulwark, not Carhartt) with an FR description. It would have failed the spec. We caught it because we checked the label against the standard before sending the quote out. That close call taught me a simple rule: a logo is not a safety certificate.

If you're comparing Bulwark coveralls and Carhartt FR coveralls, do the same check for both. Look for the standard, the arc rating or flash-fire label, care instructions, and button type. Even the zipper can matter in an arc flash. And remember that FR protection can be washed out with the wrong detergent. Chlorine bleach is especially bad.   1. Find the standard your job site enforces. ANSI/ISEA 107 for hi-vis, NFPA 70E for arc flash, NFPA 2112 for flash fire, ASTM F2413-18 for footwear.
  2. Look for the label on the actual product page or spec sheet. If the label isn't visible, do not assume.
  3. Ask for a certificate of conformity for large orders. Keep it on file.
  4. Check care instructions. FR and hi-vis materials are not indestructible.
  5. Order one sample and inspect it before dropping money on a full order.

That's it. Simple. A product is only as good as the label you can prove. That's the phrase I now put on every quote.

When this checklist doesn't help

This checklist is for people buying PPE for industrial work. If the phrase 'electric fence for dogs' brought you here, this article isn't the one you're after. But the underlying idea still applies: a fence works only if the boundary is visible and maintained. Same with a high-visibility shirt. A reflective garment with a faded or missing ANSI label is a broken wire. It looks like protection until the moment it isn't.

Also, this checklist doesn't cover used gear. Don't buy used FR clothing or hi-vis apparel. You can't tell from the outside whether the protection has degraded.
